Intolerance in Indian society

INTOLERANCE IN THE WORLD

Intolerance is a negative word and activity which is being commonly visible in today's day and age. Intolerance in layman's terms is nothing but showing and expressing hatred against an individual or a group belonging to particular sect.

The recent shootings in New Zealand and Netherlands are nothing but hatred (against invaders). The Christians in Central Nigeria, Jews and Rohingyas in Pittsburgh and Myanmar respectively. These are a few of those dastardly attacks which took place recently.

INTOLERANCE IN INDIAN SOCIETY

India is a secular country and the constitution of India provides the freedom to its citizens to practice any religion. However, recently the scenario is changing and people of one community or group are not accepting others’ point of view or belief, it can be religious or ritualistic, but it is leading to intolerance. While India has always been a diverse country in terms of culture and religion, since last 2-3 years India has been growing in terms of intolerance.

As per a report by the Pew Research Centre, India ranks as the worst country when it comes to religious freedom. The report is based on two indices—the Government Restriction Index (GRI), measuring government restriction on the free practice of religion, and the Social Hostilities Index (SHI) that looks at hostilities around the issue of religion. Sadly, India fares poorly on both counts but the score is abysmal in case of the SHI index.

Two major incidents that gave rise to intolerance in India are:

First, a Kannada scholar M. M. Kalburgi was gunned down by a visitor to his residence. Kalburgi was a well-known critic of idol-worshipping, a practice adopted by most Hindus. Kalberg's death followed the murder of a Communist leader in February in 2013.
The second one is that of increasing violence against Indians who consume beef. In September 2016, a Muslim man was beaten to death by his Hindu neighbors. The reason was that a carcass of a cow was seen nearby.

The disliking of one's beliefs and turning hostile towards each other at a rapid pace is leading towards barbarian society. On the one side, we are preparing ourselves for the Fourth Industrial Revolution and on the other side, we are going backward.
